Jim Jones Argues That He's Had More of an Impact on Younger Generation Than Nas
Jim Jones is turning heads with bold claims about his impact on hip-hop, specifically saying he’s had more influence on the younger generation than Nas. The statement came during a recent appearance on Fat Joe and Jadakiss' Don’t Quote Me podcast.
Jones began the conversation around the 29-minute mark with praise for Nas, saying, “I admired Nas. When it came to dressin’, the wordplay, the music, everything. I was a superior Nas fan, period. I’ll never take that away from him.”
However, he pivoted to contrast their legacies, adding, “But then, as I got in the game, you gotta realize, your idols become rivals. Not to take away anything from that. I developed my own style and my own lane that these kids started to gravitate toward, the same way I gravitated toward Nas when I was younger.”
When Jadakiss noted that his own son understood Nas’ impact on the culture, Jim doubled down. “My son can’t tell you one Nas record. Let’s keep it a buck here,” he said. “There must be some type of misconception when it comes to Jim Jones and what Jim Jones has done in this game. A lot of these rappers have done a tremendous job, and I take nothing away from them. But they forget—I got a hell of a catalog. Gold records, platinum records. Gold albums, platinum albums. Check my track record. Then check everybody else’s track record.”
He continued, “I’m not taking anything away from nobody. But I hear the comparisons. N**s be trying to act funny. No, I been spanking a lot of this s*. I’m talking about the industry. I been putting on … If you want to go to the Billboard entries, pull up Nas’ Billboard entries and pull up my Billboard entries.”
Following the interview, Billboard weighed in with the stats. Jim Jones has two Hot 100 hits—“We Fly High” and “Pop Champagne”—including one Top 10 single but no No. 1s. Nas, on the other hand, has 27 songs that have charted on the Hot 100, including two Top 10 hits, although he also lacks a No. 1 single.
When it comes to albums, Nas continues to dominate. He boasts 27 entries on the Billboard 200, with 16 Top 10 albums and six chart-toppers. Jim Jones has nine entries on the Billboard 200, including three Top 10 projects, but none have reached No. 1.
