Alleged Sole Survivor Speaks After Air India Flight Crashes with 242 People Aboard
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national, is believed to be the sole survivor of the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash that occurred on June 12. The aircraft went down just moments after takeoff, with 242 passengers and crew members on board.
Local authorities in Ahmedabad, western India, where the crash occurred, have not yet officially confirmed the total death toll, but initial reports suggest Ramesh may be the only survivor.
The Boeing 787-8 was carrying a diverse group of passengers, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and aviation officials have yet to release further details.
Ramesh shared his harrowing experience with Hindustan Times from his hospital bed. In a widely circulated video, he displayed his boarding pass, which confirms his identity, flight, and seat number. He is currently being treated for injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet—described by doctors as "impact injuries."
“It all happened so quickly,” Ramesh recalled. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me.” He added, “Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through both India and the international community as families await confirmation and answers about what led to the devastating crash.
