News broke on Monday (May 12) that rapper Tory Lanez was stabbed 14 times in prison and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. As the investigation unfolds, more information has emerged about the inmate suspected of carrying out the brutal attack.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the alleged assailant is 42-year-old Santino Casio, a convicted murderer with a long history of violent offenses.

Casio was originally sentenced in 2004 to life in prison with the possibility of parole after being convicted of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and personal use of a deadly weapon, along with causing great bodily injury. While incarcerated, his violent behavior continued: in 2008, Casio received an additional six-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and another two years for the possession and manufacture of a weapon behind bars, per the CDCR spokesperson.

While the circumstances surrounding the attack on Tory Lanez remain under investigation, the rapper's team shared a harrowing update about his condition via Instagram on Monday night.

“Tory was stabbed 14 times — including 7 wounds to his back, 4 to his torso, 2 to the back of his head, and 1 to the left side of his face. Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus,” the statement read.

Fortunately, the update noted that Lanez is now breathing on his own and in stable condition.

“Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” the message continued. “He also wants us to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support.”

Tory Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

The violent incident has sparked concerns about inmate safety and prison violence, particularly for high-profile individuals serving time in general population units.
